Female Genital Mutilation, Part 2: Women Suffering Complications Years Later In San Diego


This next story may be disturbing to some viewers, and it’s one you may not want your children to see or hear.

It’s about female genital mutilation, a procedure performed on young girls in 30 countries. Years later, as refugees in the U.S., these women can suffer serious medical complications … even death. Talking about it is usually taboo. So is getting medical treatment for it.

In part two of a special report, KPBS Fronteras reporter Jean Guerrero and video journalist Katie Schoolov follow a San Diego woman hoping to break those taboos.
